Todd Underwood, Founder and CEO of MitWellness

Who is Todd Underwood?

Todd Underwood is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MitWellness, the Missouri-based botanical manufacturer he started in April 2022. He leads a vertically integrated operation that handles research, extraction, formulation, manufacturing, packaging, and fulfillment in-house. He built MitWellness around one principle: every product we make should be able to prove what is on its label.

What did Todd do before MitWellness?

Before entering the botanical industry, Todd held executive roles at Ford, AON, and UPS, where he learned to run large, process-driven operations. He then served as Chief Operating Officer of CBD American Shaman, gaining direct experience in botanical manufacturing, product development, and regulatory compliance. He brought that operator's mindset to MitWellness from day one.

Why did Todd start MitWellness?

Todd started MitWellness to build the kind of manufacturer he had wanted to find as a consumer. Across the kratom category, product quality varied widely, and buyers had few ways to verify potency, sourcing, or labeling. He founded MitWellness in 2022 to change that, with a company that tests its own products, documents its process, and puts the burden of proof on the manufacturer instead of the buyer.

How does MitWellness hold itself to that standard?

Quality control is the center of how we operate, and it is the standard Todd holds every team at MitWellness to:

  • Manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility.
  • Produced under Good Manufacturing Practices consistent with 21 CFR Part 111.
  • Every batch is third-party tested for potency and contaminants.
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) available on request.

Our in-house lab also runs analytical testing on Thermo Fisher high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems, and potency is confirmed before any batch is released. Today, MitWellness processes more than 30,000 kilograms of kratom biomass every month.

What is MitSciences?

MitSciences is the research and development sister company of MitWellness. It supports research, formulation, and product development across kratom, kava, functional mushrooms, and other botanical categories, so new products are grounded in chemistry before they reach production.

What does Todd advocate for in the botanical industry?

Todd believes the industry's long-term credibility depends on accountability, including rules that hold manufacturers like us to a higher standard. He has worked alongside the American Kratom Association (AKA) on consumer-protection policy and has shared his expertise with the Nebraska Legislature on kratom policy. He has also been an outspoken voice for separating traditional kratom leaf and responsibly manufactured kratom products from concentrated and synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products, and he has publicly supported stronger federal action against synthetic 7-OH.

What is next for MitWellness?

Todd's next priorities are expanding the MitWellness botanical portfolio, growing our contract manufacturing capabilities, and supporting clearer state and federal standards for the industry. The goal behind all of it has not changed since 2022: you should be able to verify what is in the bottle, and we should be expected to prove it.
